Suspenseful Sci-Fi Novel

BOOK REVIEW

The Synapse Sequence by Daniel Godfrey
*
This book is a lot like trying to remember and then explain a dream that you had three weeks ago. Just when you think you've figured it out — everything flips around and you're suddenly walking around on the ceiling.
*
First, I admire anyone who attempts the grand feat of tackling the futuristic, science fiction genre. The complexity of the back story is so impressive. This novel is also packed with relevant issues that should be considered in terms of the future — from the impact of social classes to lofty foreign affairs.
*
The standout elements are the layered concept of the synapse sequence chamber — a futuristic device similar to virtual reality that allows people to re-experience memories. As if memories themselves aren't unreliable narrators — this book elevates misremembering and perspective to a whole new level. The details are so nuanced that I probably need to read it again.
*
What did I want from the book? I wanted the characters to be more relatable, even the supporting characters seemed distant. I also would've liked a somewhat clearer timeline. The uncertainty added to the suspense of the novel, but left me feeling a little whiplashed.
