With plenty of unexpected twists, this is a very unique story with an unexpected plot. I was racing through the pages to figure out what happened in this bizarre murder case that kept me on my toes. The story was definitely worth the read, though I felt the writing was just a bit choppy in places.

Killer Dead, Victim Alive takes place In Santa Monica, where a chilling mystery unfolds after police detectives discover the lifeless body of a notorious serial killer, Keith Victor. The plot takes a mesmerizing turn when the expected seventh victim, Chrissy Weeks, walks into a police station claiming Victor released her and dropped her off – a perplexing detail considering Victor's demise 36 hours prior.

As the investigation continues, more and more questions arise, but most importantly why is Chrissy Weeks lying, and how did Keith Victor end up dead? The latest victim's bizarre arrogance and skewed sense of reality are certain to throw the investigation off kilter even more. As some answers come to light, the mystery about the killer and the victim deepens.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. The pace was fast and I was genuinely curious to know how things would unravel from the very beginning. The detective elements were all there but didn’t feel forced or cheesy. However, I felt that there were a bit too many characters. Although their backstories were thoughtfully crafted and presented in careful detail, I would’ve liked to focus on just a few to get a better understanding of them. Viewing the story from multiple points of view certainly satisfied my curiosity about nearly all of the characters, but it also felt a bit choppy and clunky at times. I would recommend this for anyone new to detective novels and seasoned readers of the genre who are interested in a fresh take and a surprising concept.

Available on Kindle Unlimited!
This is a standalone but can be enjoyed as part of a The Serial Killer Anthology series.

Coronation Year, by Jennifer Robson ★★★✩✩ (3.5/5) Worth reading, but I wouldn’t read again.

https://www.written-by-marlene.com/book-reviews/coronation-year-by-jennifer-robson-355-worth-reading-but-i-wouldnt-read-again

https://www.written-by-marlene.com/book-reviews/coronation-year-by-jennifer-robson-355-worth-reading-but-i-wouldnt-read-again#comments

Classics

Mystery

Romance

Historical Fiction ~ Perfect for Fans of the Royal Family ~ A Subtle Touch of Mystery It took me a minute to get into this one, things moved pretty slowly in the beginning, but it eventually picked up enough to make me finish it. Far from their city, humans are fighting a war between the gods and the world is divided. Fight to protect humanity, or stay out of such lofty affairs? Iris and Roman are young writers striving to make a living and their mark on the world before the war inevitably reaches their doorstep. Inexplicably linked through a magical tie, the two are unknowingly pen pals adn rivals in real life who quickly come to rely on each other in reality and on paper. Will their bond survive the war and meeting in person?

I completely bought into the original and imaginative concept that keeps you glued to the pages. With the fluid storytelling and interesting characters, the book seamlessly unfolds, making it a quick and fun read. The historical setting feels authentic and adds another layer of depth to an already intricately woven story.

The strength of this novel lies in its well-crafted characters and their complex relationships. Ross does an excellent job of bringing her characters to life, crafting them with depth, emotions, and vulnerabilities that make them feel real and relatable. As they navigate through their trials and triumphs, readers will find themselves emotionally invested in their fates.

I’ve been reading a lot of high fantasy and felt this was a really refreshing take. With fantasy elements sprinkled throughout the story, but not overpowering it, I easily fell into the unique premise and fast-paced narrative. Ross has perfectly primed readers for an even more thrilling and detailed book two. I cannot wait to read!

Divine Rivals earns a well-deserved rating of 4.5 stars. Three women, living in drastically different times, 1916, 1942, and 2019, grapple with the world’s perception of them and how to carry on their family traditions without being condemned. Altha, Violet, and Kate prove that fighting against society’s expectations will always be a challenge, but one worth the struggle. This book is about female empowerment, revenge, and magic.

I read a lot of reviews about this book and it’s often described as being hopeful and full of positivity, but be warned, you have to trudge through a whole lot of bleakness to get there. There’s domestic abuse, sexual assault, and a lot of gut-wrenching misogyny before you get a shimmer of relief at the end of the book. You do not need extensive knowledge or experience with poetry to appreciate the beauty of these pages. Although, the author proves that she is no amateur with her distinct style and elegant way with words.

In “This Could Be What Ends Us”, Hawkins explores the seemingly small things in life that can have a big impact. The poem is both relatable and fun to read but also explores heartbreakingly real moments in relationships. “Vaudeville”, “The Change”, and “I Never Saw A Woman” are just a few more examples of how Hawkins tackles themes that are important and challenging but sheds light and positivity on them. Hawkin’s poetry is the kind that you instantly want to reread.

“I Had a Love” is one of my favorites in the collection. At first glance, it’s a simple story of love, but looking deeper it’s a painfully accurate interpretation of modern love and how our fast-paced world has affected even the most traditional genre, romance. This book is the perfect poetry book to keep close by as you’ll want to read it at the beginning of a relationship, after a breakup, during tough times, and on happy days.

I always like to make a note about editing and formatting when I review self-published books. It’s been ages since the Darker clan reunited, but when Nana calls everyone home to celebrate her 80th birthday, tensions are bound to rise. The family convenes at Nana’s dilapidated house on the tidal island where they’ll be completely secluded from the outside world for eight hours until the tide recedes. Gathered under the pretense of celebrating, Nana takes the opportunity to share her last will and testament with the family, considering her substantial wealth. Secrets and lies bubble to the surface when one by one relatives start dying. The last 100 pages or so are absolutely insane, with a whole lot of plot and world-building packed in. I wish Amarantha’s backstory had been introduced a little more throughout the book, it seemed a bit rushed at the end, but the foundation has been laid for an undoubtedly complex series, especially if it’s anything like "Throne of Glass." This has been marketed toward adult readers more and more, but I feel like this first book very much reads like young adult fantasy.

Initial thoughts: After reading “Throne of Glass”, I feel like I know where Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship is headed… and it’s not up. ? I loved the idea of the masks. I thought that was a complex, interesting twist on the classic fairytale that hinted at the darker themes. ? I cannot believe Lucien hesitated … but I'm excited to see how his character develops.

Click here to purchase A Court of Thornes and Roses, by Sarah J. Set ten years after the start of the Hunger Games, you’ll get an inside look at the war that started it all and the twisted journey of monetizing the arena. This story is set in a fantastical time when women could spontaneously transform into dragons, a sudden burst of scales, fire, and ferocious anger. Occasionally, those women-turned-dragons would burn the house down or devour their husbands on their way out. However, the world refused to accept such an embarrassing act and denied it was even possible despite the strange occurrences affecting nearly every family. This was an event that was entirely too feminine and therefore considered taboo.

Set during a fictional 1950s, the story follows Alex who is a young girl, when her aunt, along with thousands of women all over the world suddenly transform into dragons. Forced to ignore this strange reality, Alex grows up being told to keep her eyes on the ground rather than the sky. She’s told to stay quiet, to raise her younger sister, and to look the other way when her father shirks his responsibilities. She’s told to find a husband, not plan for college. This book should feel like fantasy, yet how it perfectly captures the way women are constantly told to behave, be nice, and don’t ask too many questions, is painfully realistic. Soon enough the dragons make their grand return and demand to be noticed.

Click here to purchase When Women Were Dragons, by Kelly Barnhill.

Who benefits, my dear, when you force yourself to not feel angry?”

― Kelly Barnhill, When Women Were Dragons

Embarrassment, as it turns out, is more powerful than information. When the two heirs of each warring gang, Roma and Juliette meet as children, they hope for a brighter future but their fate is already sealed.

Young love is torn apart by the blood feud, but years later the two are forced back together when a mysterious, rampant madness grips their beloved city. The two reluctantly join forces, scrambling for a future that isn’t promised, while also trying to outrun their past.

It’s exciting to read a retelling! You have that distinct sense of knowing what’s about to happen fighting for attention in your mind as you read. However, in reality, you’re just along for the ride like any other unknown plot, because, after all, a retelling doesn’t guarantee anything.

Reading a new take on Shakespeare like this very much feels like connecting with the author on a personal level. You’re in the trenches of the plot and the characters, wondering just how far the author can take the original tale and how willing they are to throw it all out the window. It’s knowing without a doubt that your interpretation of a classic – even of this magnitude – is never the same as another’s.

A retelling like this with so many assumed judgments, set against such a uniquely combined modern and historical setting is pure genius. The cultural aspects of these warring forces alone, took the well-known story of Romeo and Juliet to an unbelievable level. There’s suddenly all of this much-needed reason and explanation behind their actions. The tension created by the legitimate political unrest, running parallel with the strictly prejudiced blood feud, had me invested and on the edge of my seat. In fact, I could have almost done entirely without the fantasy aspect and still would have loved it. What the East Asian and Russian cultures brought to the story alone, along with a backstory that fueled the desperation between the two main characters, was already an elevated version of Romeo and Juliette. The fantasy elements play off of some of the cultural myths and legends, but even without it, Gong executed These Violent Delights perfectly.
*
Click here to purchase These Violent Delights, by Chloe Gong.

She…hoped. To say I got sucked in is an understatement. Based on the tragic events of the Chappaquiddick accident, this book is told from Kelly’s perspective. A 26-year-old young woman is attending an exclusive Fourth of July party when she meets The Senator, and their whirlwind attraction leads to a rapid succession of disastrous decisions. Kelly, perhaps knows that going to The Senator’s hotel and even getting in the car with him might not be the best idea, but it all seems harmless in the moment and she feels chosen by her own personal hero. Soon enough their car is skidding off the road, into the water, and Kelly is left waiting and waiting for help to come.

Oates paints a chilling picture as Kelly waits, rationalizes, and hangs on to hope. The chronology of the story, the flashbacks, and the repetition are genius and just work whether you know the ending or not. The author fully submerges you right into the terrifying, dark waters in a way that you’re not likely to forget any time soon. As a strong female lead, she is determined to keep a low profile and move on after so much tragedy. However, not even Cami could’ve prepared herself for the events that unfold during her senior year.

Eager for a distraction, Cami soon discovers that she has a secret admirer who isn’t exactly a typical teenager and even more surprising, a group of friends that she actually likes. This young artist’s life feels like it’s on the upswing when suddenly girls her age around town start vanishing. Soon enough the threat of a serial killer is the only explanation. When Cami starts to suspect her new mysterious boyfriend and his family might have something to do with the deaths, she’s determined to reveal the truth.

Meredith Linsey portrays a perfect setting, which is an oversized spooky house resting on the edge of a dark intimidating forest with more than a few magical elements. I loved how the setting felt like its own character. As you read, you can practically hear the creaking floorboards, smell the dusty attic, and perfectly picture the shadowy woods where the drama unfolds.

This book is good for young readers who are interested in mild fantasy and romance, although there are some dark undertones, such as murder, drunk driving, and obsession. The character’s maturity and the seriousness of the murders felt a little unbalanced, but the story overall was engaging!

I’d also like to note that this book is very well-edited and formatted. I wish I’d read it when it came out two years ago.

Of course, I read Twilight as a teenager and loved it, but I wasn’t sure if the storyline and characters were going to hold my attention at this point in my life. Yet, almost immediately I could see that Stephenie Meyer has matured as a writer and a storyteller over the years. I didn’t feel like I was just rereading Twilight, there’s a lot more happening on this side of the story and I loved it! My favorite realization was that the perspective was unexpected. The two main characters were not in perfect sync like some might’ve expected. In fact, they almost comically misunderstand each other throughout the entire book, which made this whole fantasy world feel relatable and entertaining.

Midnight Sun follows the storyline of Meyer’s debut novel, Twilight, only from Edward’s perspective. You might think you already know the story, but the background details about the many characters, human and vampire, will keep you on your toes. The main character’s ability to read minds seems simple and straightforward in the first book, but the explanation and execution are intricate and well-thought-out by the author in round two. I was equally impressed with the way Meyer weaves the family’s abilities and histories into the storyline without a bunch of info dumping.

SPOILERS:
Things that really surprised me. How truly inhuman Edward feels. I imagined him understanding humans more so because of his ability to read their minds, but he is tragically disconnected from them.

The dynamic between Rosalie and Edward is far more complicated than I ever imagined.

Alice’s ability to see the future is also Edward’s because he is SO in tune with her.

The timeline. I don’t think I realized how quickly things moved in the first book. They essentially have one pleasant day together and then their lives are on the line.

Finally, Edward was always planning to leave! I did not see that coming and it adds a lot of complexity to the second book.

Click here to purchase, Midnight Sun, by Stephenie Meyer.

Though I hated her, I was absolutely aware that my hatred was unjust. But just because they are hosting a star-studded end-of-the-summer party, doesn’t mean they aren’t harboring their own family secrets. The siblings have come a long way since being abandoned by their superstar father who walked out on them more than once, but the party is destined to bring up years of unresolved family drama.
*
Having three siblings of my own, I was pulled right into the family dynamic and enjoyed following the four siblings throughout their lives. Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of those writers that tells a story with detail and precision but in a very relatable way. The writing style is sophisticated but easy to read, which is why I blew through the nearly four hundred pages in just a few days.
*
Although the back cover description hinted at a little more mystery and suspense than there actually ended up being, it still kept me reading long into the night. The setting. Sun-kissed Malibu on the rise, before tourists inundated the area, was probably a wonder to see firsthand, but I feel like I got to experience a bit of it myself after reading this. The constant trail of sand, the precarious heat, and the impending end of the summer made for the perfect scene, especially for building family drama. The place took on a life of its own and I loved that!
*
Click here to purchase, Malibu Rising, by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

You May Also Like:

Waking the Tiger, by Peter A. The real suspense of the novel is more about facilitating the character’s development and less about a true mystery, but it really works for a sequel. I’m impressed with the author’s ability to stay true to the original characters, and her style, while truly offering something unique in terms of writing. This book isn’t quite like her others, but I still blew through it. Armentrout surpasses the original story by a mile! The characters are more likable, the relationships are far more complex, and overall, the plot has a stronger foundation.

I am trudging through the Blood and Ash series, and have almost moved on several times, but the Flesh and Fire series convinced me to stick it out, if only for the overlap. Truthfully, I feel that both series would’ve benefited from a more chronological timeline.

What can I say about the story? I find the idea of the Primals and Gods at the forefront of this series to be much more interesting than what’s happening in Blood and Ash. The Primals of Life and Death feel like a greater mythology that I want to keep learning about. There are deeper layers to the plot, and frankly, it’s just not as confusing as Blood and Ash.

What doesn’t work? The repetition. The plot is complicated, in this series and in Blood and Ash. You can easily get lost in all of the background information and false histories. However, the constant dialogue between the characters and the Sera’s inner dialogue, repeating what we already know and trying to figure out the truth about the past is hard to get through at times. I feel like the premise is all there and unique but the execution is lacking in certain areas.

However, I do really appreciate the main female character, Sera. There’s nothing more frustrating to me than a powerful female lead who is independent, fierce, and courageous, only to later have her portrayed as perfectly innocent and untouched, basically for the benefit of the male lead. I appreciated the role reversal here. Besides that, I could read about Nyktos all day!

Click here to purchase A Shadow in the Ember.

It is far easier to be lied to than to acknowledge that you have been lied to.”
― Jennifer L. Great writing creates empathetic readers and Martin does an excellent job of evoking emotion and forcing the reader to question what they would do themselves, right and wrong, and much more.

I did want to see less telling and more showing in the writing style. A few times, the author seems to be explaining why he was writing. The stories were all unique and could carry their weight, so the explanation wasn’t always needed. I appreciated the variety of characters, perspectives, and detailed backgrounds that went into each individual story. Each story kept my attention and on more than one occasion I felt a real connection and relatability with the characters.

My favorite story was “The Return Flight. I felt that the premise was entirely unique and I loved the conundrum of the ethical dilemma. The helpful tips, inspiring quotes, and fresh take are everything I want from a guide like this.

In a market absolutely flooded with self-help tips and tricks and a special new emphasis on self-improvement, MYNDFUL, By Dr. Ana Candia, ND stands out among the many with this easy-to-read informational guide about the mind and body. If you’ve read all of the meditation books, tried all the yoga classes but still feel like you’re missing something, it’s this book! Candia’s guide, which is divided into six sections brilliantly hones in on the factors that play into a more mindful and peaceful life. The message is clear, concise, and the journey simply screams genuine.

There’s a real relatability here. Candia’s way of writing and presenting information isn’t overwhelming or too in your face. She sticks to the facts, supports those facts, and makes you want to learn more. I also really enjoyed the fresh take on these subjects. There are so many books out there in this genre, but this information feels like a new approach and like it can actually be applied to your everyday life.

I especially enjoyed the language section, which is the first in this book. There is something really satisfying about putting an actual word to some of these concepts. The definitions and explanations are easy to digest and I immediately wanted to commit them to memory.

Another important note about MYNDFUL is that you do not need to be an expert to enjoy it. Although the author touches on some complex concepts and practices, the information is presented in an enjoyable, very understandable way. The average reader, and even a beginner when it comes to yoga and meditation, can appreciate the plethora of knowledge and information here.

Finally, the book is very well-edited and formatted. The imagery and layout are perfect for this genre! But what? When the reality of her husband's betrayal becomes too much, Selena finds herself confiding in a stranger on the train home one night. There’s an instant connection between the two women and they find themselves musing over how much easier life would be if all their problems just disappeared. The interaction is cathartic and perhaps a bit creepy, but Selena dismisses the whole thing soon after. That is until the nanny that has been sleeping with her husband suddenly and mysteriously disappears. Could the stranger on the train be involved? Or is Selena’s husband not who she thought he was?
*
From several points of view—maybe one too many— the mystery unravels and new characters, strangers, and forgotten betrayals surface. I really like multiple points of view but there were just a few too many for me. It was disorienting at times and made it difficult to stay in the story. I recommend reading this one quickly, without a lot of downtime in between, otherwise, you might find yourself a little confused. Though the pacing was solid and you’ll be pulled into the story soon enough. Although I suspected where things were going, I still bought into the suspense and found myself surprised a few times.
*
Trigger warnings: domestic abuse, violence.

She understood now, how you turned away until you couldn't.
