Entertaining enough!
*
The Night Shift was entertaining with a few unexpected twists and will satisfy mystery-seekers who are new to the genre or are looking for an easy read. But… it wasn’t a show-stopper for me.
*
I didn’t feel a true sense of suspense and the characters were somewhat bland to me; however, there were still a few surprises and the writing kept a good pace. I think I was really hoping for something spectacular and maybe my expectations were too high, but the mystery didn’t blow me away. A few details/subplots were thrown in, mainly to create tension, but didn’t result in anything or add much to the story. This is a suspense trope that I really am not a fan of, although you don’t realize it’s happening until the story is over and done with.
*
This is a good one if you’re stuck in a reading slump and appreciate the mystery, and suspense genre. The chapters are incredibly short, sometimes only two or three pages, and the multiple points of view move things along pretty quickly. There’s enough mystery to keep you wondering.

In the movies, the detectives always end up interviewing witnesses at a strip club, and it seemed like it would be pretty cool. But this is awful.

People who virtue-signal are much more likely to have what they call the ‘dark triad’ of personality traits—Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy.

'I wondered if I’d find the place where I belonged and would finally feel. . . complete. All I’d have to do was mount my horse and leave—throw my hands wide and fly away on the wind toward the stars that beckoned me to find them. But my responsibilities made me ignore their pull. So here I stayed. Away from wherever it was my soul longed to be.'
