The Good Sister, by Sally Hepworth
★ ★ ★ ★ Loved it!
*
A compelling read! I loved the two perspectives that were happening in this book, especially since they’re twins. The two sisters have always been by each other’s side, but are starkly different. Their complicated past proves that two people can experience the same thing in entirely different ways.
*
Fern has always relied on her sister Rose. Her twin sister is the one who knows how to handle Fern when she has sensory overload or gets overwhelmed in a public place, ever since they were little kids. Rose has always known how to swoop in and save the day, especially on that awful night when they were twelve and a boy died.
*
Ever since then, Fern has been searching for a way to repay Rose for swooping in once again. When Fern discovers that Rose can’t have a baby of her own, it seems like the perfect opportunity to help her sister. But soon enough, the sisters realize that the things that have always kept them close might not be so concrete. Memory is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, the good sister.

I felt drawn to and intrigued by the character, Fern, and her complex connection with her sister. The journal from Rose’s perspective was a nice way to mix things up and kept me on my toes until the end. I did figure out most of the twists before they happened, but the book was still a quirky, fast-paced, enjoyable read with some shock value. The intriguing characters and relationships are what stood out to me.
*
This was an audio book for me and I blew right through it, laughing out loud to myself several times throughout. Fern’s character development was subtle and well done and I loved her from the very beginning!
