A Suspenseful Duology by Lisa Jewell

The Family Remains (Book #2), by Lisa Jewell
★ ★ ★ ★ Loved it!
Lisa Jewell strikes again. The Family Upstairs is one of my all-time favorite books, not only because of the fascinating hoard of characters, each captivating in their own way, but because it had one of my favorite troupes. A mysterious house, packed with secrets, that appears seemingly normal from the outside is my bread and butter, and Lisa Jewell pulled it off seamlessly in book one.

For that reason, and because I generally just love Lisa Jewell, I could not miss this sequel, though I know I’m a little late to the party. I read about the author's hesitation to write sequels in the past, but I am so glad to she decided to wrap up this story with a second book.

The Family Remains is a satisfying closure to a great story, with enough new characters and insight to keep you on your toes. The real suspense of the novel is more about facilitating the character’s development and less about a true mystery, but it really works for a sequel. I’m impressed with the author’s ability to stay true to the original characters, and her style, while truly offering something unique in terms of writing. This book isn’t quite like her others, but I still blew through it. She’s doing something right and she’ll likely always be a favorite!

But we all behaved badly in that house; not one of us got out of there without a black mark. I’ve come to accept our sins as survival strategies.”

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.
