Lucy the Giant, By Sherri L. Smith
*
It’s a coming-of-age story that doesn’t involve a love interest and I love that.
*
This is one of those books that I read as a kid, (I’m very into rereading right now) maybe it was in high school and it’s really stuck with me throughout the years. The main character and her alcoholic father would pop into my head from time to time. I had forgotten most of the plot and the title too, but I recently tracked it down on eBay and was so excited to reread.
*
There was a reason that this book stuck with me for all of those years. Five out of five stars!
*
The setting grips you from the beginning with, “I hear deep, mournful noises coming from the Sound. Although I can’t see them, I can hear the pod of humpback whales sounding their way through the water.” The unforgiving cold of Sitka, Alaska, a rundown McDonald’s, and a crabbing boat on the icy Bering Sea set a powerful scene for a fifteen-year-old girl who is tall enough to pass for a grown woman but craves the simplicity of being a kid. The setting is a relentless reflection of her reality.
*
Lucy, the main character finds her way onto a crabbing boat and passes as a seasonal worker. There, she finds independence, money, danger, and more surprises. The author weaves in the reality of the crabbing industry in the Bering Sea so skillfully that I almost wish I could try it for a season myself ... ? Which might be crazy, but among the icy waves and back breaking labor, Lucy finds clarity and family and shines through the threatening conditions.
*
This young adult novel is a breeze to read and you’ll fall in love with the characters as quickly as you can say, Santa Barbara.
