Rebecca Ross's novel Divine Rivals is a delicately woven fantasy that seamlessly incorporates a historical setting for a book of pure enjoyment.

Divine Rivals features the story of two competing journalists who are navigating the tumultuous times of war. Far from their city, humans are fighting a war between the gods and the world is divided. Fight to protect humanity, or stay out of such lofty affairs? Iris and Roman are young writers striving to make a living and their mark on the world before the war inevitably reaches their doorstep. Inexplicably linked through a magical tie, the two are unknowingly pen pals adn rivals in real life who quickly come to rely on each other in reality and on paper. Will their bond survive the war and meeting in person?
 
I completely bought into the original and imaginative concept that keeps you glued to the pages. With the fluid storytelling and interesting characters, the book seamlessly unfolds, making it a quick and fun read. The historical setting feels authentic and adds another layer of depth to an already intricately woven story. 

The strength of this novel lies in its well-crafted characters and their complex relationships. Ross does an excellent job of bringing her characters to life, crafting them with depth, emotions, and vulnerabilities that make them feel real and relatable. As they navigate through their trials and triumphs, readers will find themselves emotionally invested in their fates.

I’ve been reading a lot of high fantasy and felt this was a really refreshing take. With fantasy elements sprinkled throughout the story, but not overpowering it, I easily fell into the unique premise and fast-paced narrative. Ross has perfectly primed readers for an even more thrilling and detailed book two. I cannot wait to read! 

Divine Rivals earns a well-deserved rating of 4.5 stars. Prepare to be enchanted by this entertaining rivalry, and lose yourself in the gripping world crafted by Ross.
