Supernatural Suspense ~ Haunted House ~ Unearthing Family Secrets
Daisy Darker, by Alice Feeney
★ ★ ★ Not for me, but I might recommend this to someone else. Daisy Darker grew up with death lurking around the corner thanks to a heart condition. Her illness wasn’t the only thing that drove her family apart though, divorce, lies, betrayal, and more have always kept the family on the outs. It’s been ages since the Darker clan reunited, but when Nana calls everyone home to celebrate her 80th birthday, tensions are bound to rise. The family convenes at Nana’s dilapidated house on the tidal island where they’ll be completely secluded from the outside world for eight hours until the tide recedes. Gathered under the pretense of celebrating, Nana takes the opportunity to share her last will and testament with the family, considering her substantial wealth. Secrets and lies bubble to the surface when one by one relatives start dying. Only one thing is for sure, the killer is in the house. Alice Feeney definitely has a certain style. If you joined the hype around “Rock Paper Scissors”, you’ll likely enjoy this one, although there’s a different kind of twist at the end. The surprise was very unexpected. Still, the writing felt a bit formulaic to me and I didn’t feel that the character’s actions were all totally believable, or that I could really buy into the ending. What worked? I absolutely LOVE a good creepy house to set the scene. I especially love it when the house is almost a character all on its own. Favorite character: Nana - she’s so sneaky! All I’d have to do was mount my horse and leave—throw my hands wide and fly away on the wind toward the stars that beckoned me to find them.
But my responsibilities made me ignore their pull.
So here I stayed. Away from wherever it was my soul longed to be.'
