Beauty and the Beast Retelling ~ Enemies to Lovers ~ Fantasy Romance

A Court of Thornes and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas
★ ★ ★ ★ Loved it!

[Readers be warned, some SPOILERS ahead]

When nineteen-year-old Feyre slays a wolf in the woods while trying to feed her family, a terrifying creature arrives shortly after to demand retribution. As a true Beauty and Beast retelling, the beauty strikes a bargain with the beast to protect her family. Brought to a dangerous magical land that she's always been warned about, Feyre learns that her captor is more than a beast, but one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled her world.

This was a very quick read with a wild ending! The last 100 pages or so are absolutely insane, with a whole lot of plot and world-building packed in. I wish Amarantha’s backstory had been introduced a little more throughout the book, it seemed a bit rushed at the end, but the foundation has been laid for an undoubtedly complex series, especially if it’s anything like "Throne of Glass." This has been marketed toward adult readers more and more, but I feel like this first book very much reads like young adult fantasy.

Initial thoughts: After reading “Throne of Glass”, I feel like I know where Feyre and Tamlin’s relationship is headed… and it’s not up. ? I loved the idea of the masks. I thought that was a complex, interesting twist on the classic fairytale that hinted at the darker themes. ? I cannot believe Lucien hesitated … but I'm excited to see how his character develops.
