BOOK REVIEW
[no spoilers] * You Are Not Alone, by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen ★ ★ Not for me, but I might recommend this to someone else. * This one wasn’t for me, but I might recommend it to someone else if they are a fan of Greer and Sarah’s writing. * Shay, a quiet single woman living in New York City witnesses a tragic event on a subway platform one morning. Shay’s drawn into the mystery of why a woman, who has a lot in common with her, would commit suicide without leaving a note or an explanation. A bit obsessive, Shay finds herself falling deeper and deeper into the mystery and intertwined in the woman’s life, including her friends, a dazzling pair of sisters that seem determined to help Shay, and more. * In my opinion, it was simply too long and the characters were difficult to connect with. The main character, Shay, came across as fragile and a little naive. I was rooting for her, but at times she was overly sensitive and relied too much on other people for her own happiness. Whereas the other women were purposely meant to be distant and mysterious, which, ultimately made them too difficult to relate to. The vague history and feelings of the sisters were meant to create suspense, but that paired with the first person perspective caused a muddled, awkward picture of them. I didn’t feel drawn to them. * The plot trudged on. The main character made so many ridiculous decisions I found it hard to empathize with her at times. Also, I felt the plot was lacking and relied heavily on suspense tropes, like cliffhangers, a mysterious past that’s hinted at but purposely not revealed, and switching between perspectives to move things along. * Click here to purchase You Are Not Alone, by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen. All I’d have to do was mount my horse and leave—throw my hands wide and fly away on the wind toward the stars that beckoned me to find them.
But my responsibilities made me ignore their pull.
So here I stayed. Away from wherever it was my soul longed to be.'
