The Silent Patient, by Alex Michaelides
*
Even if you’re looking for the twist, you won’t see this one coming.
*
I thought I had this one figured out a few times. I was teetering on the edge of the big “ohhhhhh, I get it,” moment, but I was not prepared for the major twist that takes this suspense novel to a whole new level.
*
Dr. Theo Faber, a criminal psychotherapist, is captivated or fixated on a well-known murder investigation that’s a seemingly open and closed case. Alicia Berenson, a famous painter is the only suspect when her husband comes home late and ends up shot five times shortly after. She doesn’t speak up to defend herself. In fact, she never speaks another word ever again, even when she’s found guilty and sentenced to a secure psychiatric unit. Is it grief or guilt or both causing her silence? Dr. Theo Faber is determined to find out.
*
A few things that I loved about this suspense novel. 1.) Half of the book is a journal, which to me has always seemed more intimate than even traditional first-person perspective. The reader gets to know the character in a different way when they are given the opportunity to share their thoughts and also question them. 2.) The unreliable or questionable narrator literary device just works in the suspense/thriller genre, especially in this novel. This layered element is genius in The Silent Patient. Not to mention, the idea of a slightly unstable narrator that is a psychotherapist, is something just I wish I came up with myself! 3.) Alex Michaelides bends time better than Dr. Strange. The past and present are one and it’s so expertly done that, once again, I wish I could do it myself.
*
The Silent Patient is Alex Michaelides’s first novel and I can’t wait to see what else he comes up with!
*
If you’re interested in The Silent Patient, you may be interested in my upcoming suspense novel, which also is told partly through the writing in a mysterious journal. Stay tuned for updates about my upcoming book and other suspense novels!
