BOOK REVIEW

The Family Upstairs, by Lisa Jewell
*
I’ve added this one to my list of favorites. A dark and intriguing addition to Lisa Jewell’s success.
*
If you’ve ever read anything by Lisa Jewell, you know that she’s all but mastered her genre. Each of her books begs my favorite question when reading a psychological thriller, and that is, “what the hell is actually happening?” With endless possibilities, twists, and turns, you won’t be able to put down this equally dark, and strangely hopeful book.
*
Three questions you’ll ask yourself while reading this compelling novel.
1.) Is this guy uniquely heroic or twisted and evil? Villain or hero?
2.) How can two people wreak so much havoc on a respected family?
3.) Do I really want to know what happened? Because that would mean that the book is over and I love these characters!
*
What else did I love about The Family Upstairs?
All of the characters have their own twists that are perfectly executed in the most unexpected ways. The setting, which constantly changes, is a crucial element. The house itself is its own dark and intricate character. The hidden world that exists in plain sight is so well developed that as a reader you can’t help but feel connected to it.
*

The timeline and perspectives shift and are expertly woven. Flashing back and forth between the present and past can create a disconnect between characters and their actions, but Jewell’s method is flawless.
My favorite character is Henry. Do I love him, hate him, want him to be happy? I don’t really know.

'I wondered if I’d find the place where I belonged and would finally feel. . . complete. All I’d have to do was mount my horse and leave—throw my hands wide and fly away on the wind toward the stars that beckoned me to find them. But my responsibilities made me ignore their pull. So here I stayed. Away from wherever it was my soul longed to be.'
