The Cruel Prince, By Holly Black
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ MUST READ!
*
This young adult series has completely captured my attention. Holly Black has an enviable ability to create a world so distant, yet so relatable. A special attention to detail is necessary for success in fantasy, but Black has woven an intricate world that feels effortless when reading. Each element is carefully introduced, entertaining, and ultimately a part of the bigger picture.
*
My favorite character is Jude. She’s not afraid to admit that she’s hungry for power. She’s willing to do almost anything to ensure her freedom, which can only come with that power. Or so it seems. Jude is conniving in the best way, an attribute that is necessary for her survival among princes and queens, when she is the outcast of a world she was forced into.
*
Jude’s family history is complicated, to say the least, but not in traditional ways. The way she and her family deal with their past and navigate the present is oddly authentic. Black has carefully developed the complexities of each character through their relationships and interactions with their families.
*
I’m excited to keep reading and to discover what happens to these characters!
