The Blue Mirror, by Kathe Koja
★ ★ ★ Worth reading!

This nugget of a book, of about 120 pages, can be read in a weekend, but it will stick with you long after that. The tension builds steadily and there are evil and dark, almost supernatural elements that rise the stakes even higher. An excellent, thought-provoking read that is great for book discussions about coming-of-age, abusive relationships, and survival.

Maggy is sixteen years old. With an alcoholic mother at home and no interest in school except for her art classes, she would rather spend all of her time at The Blue Mirror, a cafe where she spends hours drawing everything she sees, including the homeless kids that roam the city. Maggy sees the world through an artist’s eye and she can bring anything that she sees to life, that is until she meets Cole. He’s beautiful and interesting, loves her, and is living on the streets. But there’s something about the mysterious boy who seems to understand Maggy for who she really is. There’s just one infuriating detail, Maggy can’t seem to draw Cole. What is it about him that she can’t see clearly?

The Blue Mirror is one of those books that I desperately wish I had read in college. If I could take it back to class and analyze it for a few weeks, then I would feel satisfied, and like I could rate it accordingly. This is one of those books that needs to be mulled over and probably reread a few times.

Kathe Koja’s stream of consciousness writing style immerses you into the life of Maggy, a moody teenager who is lonely and struggling more than she realizes until there is someone there to pay attention to her. The fast-paced, flowing writing style brings the essence of Maggy right off the pages, who is very much in her own head, but also extremely observant as an artist.
*
The Blue Mirror is a sharp reminder that relationships can be abusive in more ways than one and there’s a very big difference between love and infatuation.
*
Trigger warnings: substance abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse.

She sits, she wipes her face again, she stares at her hands, filthy hands and “Tell you what? I fell on the ice, by the gazebo, L was trying to get away. I’ve been trying for a long time.”
“Get away from what?” but somewhere in me, like a drawing I can’t see, I already know, I know that I know even thought I don’t want to, don’t want to hear what she’s saying but it’s too late, now that she’s started she won’t stop.
