Dystopian Fiction ~ Prequel to The Hunger Games ~ Action and Consequences ~ Survival of the Fittest

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, by Suzanne Collins.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ MUST READ!

[SOME SPOILERS] This book transported me to 2010 when I was fully obsessed with "The Hunger Games". If you haven’t checked this one off your TBR, do it before November 17th because you’ll be dying to see the movie adaptation!

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes further expanded the world of Panem and added even more complexity to the dark dystopian civilization. Set ten years after the start of the Hunger Games, you’ll get an inside look at the war that started it all and the twisted journey of monetizing the arena. I loved the backstory, even if it was through the eyes of the evil Coriolanus Snow. You can practically track his downfall down to the very second.

What worked? I was expecting to hate Snow from the very start, but his gradual fall from grace was much more realistic and layered. Also, Snow’s time spent in District 12 was genius, that level of careful plotting is rarely matched.

What didn’t work? It was a bit long. I appreciated the extensive details and backstories, but I can see how some might feel it was somewhat slow in the middle.

More thoughts: I NEED to know how Tigris got to where she was in the later books! Somewhere along the line she and Snow had an earth-shattering falling out of some kind that I would kill to read about.

Most interesting character: Coriolanus Snow
