Mr. and Mrs. Wright are putting in some last-ditch effort to save their marriage with a private getaway to celebrate their ten-year anniversary. The couple is already only on edge before they arrive at the converted church that’s meant to be a romantic getaway. The blizzard, lack of luxury, and strange location do nothing to help the mood and bitterness between the two. Right away, strange happenings, like mysterious noises, ghostly faces, and locked doors make it clear this romantic retreat is not what they signed up for.

As the reader gets to know more about the couple’s marriage through a series of letters written by Mrs. Wright on every anniversary, it’s obvious that the marriage started off strong but is filled with secrets and more than a little resentment. Will Mr. Wright be able to outrun his own demons? Will Mrs. Wright be able to turn the weekend around before all of their secrets come out?

Overall, I rate this book four stars for the creative and utterly unexpected twist at the end. The letters were also a clever facilitator in this novel that I enjoyed. However, the suspense felt slightly formulaic to me. Almost every chapter ended with a dramatic cliffhanger, which was almost always followed up with a misunderstanding and the hints weren’t always so subtle. This method did build suspense throughout the book, but I wished there was a little more variety in the style. The twist at the end was a shocker and it made the book for me. Knowing that so many people who have read Rock Paper Scissors received a shock by the twist had me on the lookout, but I could NOT figure out what was happening until it was right in my face.

I thought the author’s descriptions were unique and well-written. For example, “Books can be mirrors for whoever holds them and people don’t always like what they see,” and “Words don’t come with gift receipts and you can’t take them back.” These small details helped bring the characters to life and gave you a peek into their complexities. I wanted to like the characters more, but that’s all part of the mystery!

If you liked Rock Paper Scissors, you may like my upcoming suspense novel, Where Is She? Stay tuned for more details about the fast-paced novel with short chapters!
