No Exit, by Taylor Adams
*
This thriller/suspense is a roller coaster of sinking dread and glimmering hope in the midst of a terrible snowstorm at a secluded rest stop with four strangers. Taylor Adams masterfully sets the scene for suspense and panic! Be prepared. Your heart will be pumping from start to finish.
*
Darby is a college student racing home to see her estranged mother before her surgery when she gets trapped in a threatening snowstorm and is forced to wait out the deadly weather in a rundown rest stop with four strangers. By mistake, Darby discovers a terrible secret while they’re waiting. Running on no sleep, too much caffeine, and worry about her mother, Darby inadvertently learns that she’s also witnessing a kidnapping.
*
In one of the parked cars of the rest stop, getting covered in snow, someone is locked up in the back of a van. Stranded with four strangers who just became extremely dangerous, no cell service, and hours before the snowplows will come, Darby is forced to wait it out with the kidnappers. Stuck between helping and making matters worse, Darby must decide one way or another.
*
The main character is scrappy but from the outside seems to be an average young woman. Armed with nothing but determination, Darby proves to be a fierce leading character. Time and time again her plan to help goes awry and she quickly learns that first impressions can’t always be trusted. Every possible thing that could go wrong, goes wrong. Every glimmer of hope is snatched away, but Darby never gives up.
*
Disclaimer: This is a dark story with some violence — not the most ideal nighttime read. Even though the point of view is mainly Darby’s, the reader gets a few brief glimpses into the kidnapper’s head, and it’s enough to make your skin crawl.
*
It’s a heart-pounding thriller with more twists than I could count.
4 out of 5 stars!
