Nine Perfect Strangers, by Liane Moriarty
*
This book is placed in three different genres, thriller, drama, and mystery. Overall, I was glad I read this one and I’m excited about the movie, but do not expect a heart-pumping, edge-of-your-seat thriller here. There are some twists and surprises and I appreciated the sense of impending something, as a suspense reader, but the book is mainly drama and moves along slowly at first.
*
Nine Perfect Strangers, by Liane Moriarty is set at a luxurious health retreat; hot springs, a historic mansion, organic foods, and manicured gardens included. The wellness retreat is meant to transform the guests after just ten days. Secluded and run by a gorgeous but mysterious woman from Russia, there is a sense of foreboding right from the locked gate and list of contraband up to the mandatory smoothies. As the guests, all from various backgrounds on their own personal journeys come together, one thing becomes clear, the Tranquillim House isn’t quite what they signed up for. Will the guests leave transformed?
*
In terms of suspense, it’s a very slow burn. As you’re reading, you can feel the slight build-up and catch hints towards something more that’s going on at this luxurious spa, but it takes a WHILE to get there. A few cryptic remarks, some curiosity about the characters, and the knowledge that something inevitably had to happen at some point, kept me going through the book, which some have described as too slow.
*
Personally, I loved the character development. I thought they were introduced in a smart, gradual way and I appreciated that the time spent with each character wasn’t perfectly balanced. The reader spent more time with some characters than others, which was executed nicely, otherwise, nine characters would have been just too many. I think the whole point is that everyone has their own demons, and while some are worse than others, that doesn’t make it feel any less real to the person experiencing them. That being said, some of the excitement could have been introduced sooner, to keep the tension a little higher. Nine Perfect Strangers explore the notion that first impressions aren’t always correct and you don’t really know a person by what they’re projecting.
*
Overall, I will rate this 3.5 stars out of 5. It’s a great drama, but missed the mark on thriller/mystery for me.
*
If you’re looking for a great suspense book to read, keep an eye out for my upcoming novel! Suspense and mystery all wrapped up for those of you who like authors like Lisa Jewell, B.A. Paris, and more!

'I wondered if I’d find the place where I belonged and would finally feel. . . complete. All I’d have to do was mount my horse and leave—throw my hands wide and fly away on the wind toward the stars that beckoned me to find them. But my responsibilities made me ignore their pull. So here I stayed. Away from wherever it was my soul longed to be.'
