Lord of the Flies, By William Golding
*
Reading a classic like this in high school versus ten years later is understandably an entirely different experience.
*
Unfortunately, I wanted to like it more than I did the second time around. The Lord of the Flies didn’t quite do it for me. The lack of set up or background information about the rest of the world outside of the island is meant to represent something universal, but it was distracting to me. I wanted just a little more explanation as to what happened before the boys ended up on the island. I felt that need for more details (not about the scenery) up until the very last page.
*
I think the representation of democracy and order versus tyranny and dictatorship would have had more of an impact if the characters had been more relatable, which could’ve been achieved with some introduction about their previous lives.

*
My favorite character was Simon. To me, he was the most misunderstood and innocent, much more than Piggy.

*
Overall, I felt the message about the inner savage in all of us would’ve been received better with a beginning and an end to the story. The book felt like the middle of a much bigger story that was expected to stand on its own, but the execution fell a little short for me. That being said, this is a classic, and the fact that this is told entirely from children’s perspectives, without any adults, is definitely interesting.
