Is the Booktok favorite Throne of Glass, by Sarah J Maas worth it?

Yes! With eight books, the last one being over 900 pages, this series is a commitment. But, wow, is it worth it! Fans of Harry Potter, fantasy, romance, adventure, magic, and more will get lost in the world-building and the character development.
*
There’s a lot going on in this series, but it’s so well-developed and organized that you will feel completely immersed in the world and the history early on. The layers and layers of subplots and supporting characters were ingeniously crafted without being too much or too little. I was entirely invested in almost all of the characters and their storylines. They were each unique and individually complex in a brilliant way that had me on the edge of my seat rooting for a happy ending for all of them!
*
This series has magic and is often compared to Harry Potter but this is such a different world that more mature readers will enjoy!

Books Ranked 1-8

Empire of Storms
Kingdom of Ash
Queen of Shadows
Heir of Fire
Assassin's Blade
Crown of Midnight
Throne of Glass

Tower of Dawn: (I didn’t dislike Tower of Dawn by any means, and it’s entirely crucial to the plot – do not skip it!! – but I sincerely missed the other characters and it felt a little drawn out to me).

Reading tip: I wish I’d read Assassin’s Blade before Heir of Fire or at the very least before Queen of Shadows, but I’m glad I didn’t read it first, or I would've been devastated!

Heir of Fire is when things start to get really crazy! Don't give up before book three.

Kingdom of Ash is almost a thousand pages and I read it in about three days. You will not regret it!

Favorite characters ranked:

  • Aelin Galathynius a.k.a firebreathing bitch queen: She’s snarky, mischievous, determined and completely imperfect in all the best ways.
  • Manon Blackbeak is the badass witch you always want at your side, with a soft spot for her wyvern. She’s layered, loyal, and fierce above all else.
  • Rowan Whitethorn, fighting from now until whatever end for Aelin.
  • Eldie Lochan, the most unexpected badass, who saved the day more than once and turned Lorcan into an absolute softie.
  • Dorian Havilliard, oh the angst! It takes him a while to get himself together but he comes out on top and I loved every part of his story.

“I missed you,” he said quietly, his gaze darting between her mouth and eyes. “When I was in Wendlyn. I lied when I said I didn’t. From the moment you left, I missed you so much I went out of my mind. I was glad for the excuse to track Lorcan here, just to see you again. And tonight, when he had that knife at your throat …” The warmth of his callused finger bloomed through her as he traced a path over the cut on her neck. “I kept thinking about how you might never know that I missed you with only an ocean between us. But if it was death separating us … I would find you. I don’t care how many rules it would break. Even if I had to get all three keys myself and open a gate, I would find you again. Always.”

Empire of Storms ripped my heart out! From start to finish, it was by far the most intense book in the series. I am so not prepared to read Tower of Dawn after all the drama and suspense. Empire of Storms was nonstop action with even more gut-wrenching twists than the previous books. Aelin Galathynius is officially my favorite character and I find her endlessly entertaining!
Lorcan’s onyx eyes were unreadable as he scanned her face. And then
he said quietly, “I wanted to go to Perranth with you.”
Lorcan dropped the shield.
