From the Mouths of Sirens, by Abigail Hair
★ ★ ★ ★ Loved it!
*
A unique retelling of The Little Mermaid with more than a few twists.
*
What if a gladiator-style tournament between nations decided who took charge? What if the Little Mermaid had to kill the prince? Princess Saoirse has trained her entire life to compete in a tournament for the throne. The nation that currently rules is responsible for her mother’s death and she wants nothing more than the opportunity to win and create a better life for her people. When Saoirse’s father refuses to allow her to compete, she makes a deal that’s more complicated than she ever could have imagined with the infamous Sea Witch. Saoirse’s task… kill the prince, survive, win, and uncover the truth about a tournament that will decide all their fates.

Abigail Hair has created a well-written story with effortless world-building and plenty of detail. This novel is perfect for young fantasy readers who appreciate interesting characters and retellings. The author has clearly set the characters up for development and growth while laying the groundwork for a more complex twist among the rulers of very different nations. I would recommend this for middle-grade to young adult readers.
*
I appreciated the tension between the two characters as they learned that not everything is as it seems and that not everyone can be trusted. I’m excited to see how these characters mature and develop as it seems they have a lot to learn about each other and their histories.

'I wondered if I’d find the place where I belonged and would finally feel. . . complete. All I’d have to do was mount my horse and leave—throw my hands wide and fly away on the wind toward the stars that beckoned me to find them. But my responsibilities made me ignore their pull. So here I stayed. Away from wherever it was my soul longed to be.'
