Book of Night, by Holly Black
★ ★ ★ ★.5 Loved it!

The ending! The twists just kept coming, right up until the last page!

Holly Black is an automatic read for me. I grew up getting lost in The Spiderwick Chronicles and thoroughly enjoyed The Cruel Prince as an adult. She has a way of pulling you into a story and you’re invested in the most unlikely characters. I was excited to see her writing for adults and was not disappointed.
*
Book of Night is something different. I loved that it didn’t remind me of anything, not even Black’s previous work. This author is really showing her range here.

Charlie seems to be fighting a losing battle against her dark side, which has followed her since her early childhood when her mother’s boyfriend taught her how to run a good con. Even though she’s tried to put her past behind her, and even settled down with a seemingly normal boyfriend —who doesn’t lie or cheat but falls asleep watching tv with her— Charlie can’t quite shake her old tendencies. Tempted by good mystery and a few past acquaintances, soon enough Charlie is in deeper than she’s ever been and nothing is as it seems. Throw in the complication of magic and you’ll be guessing until the very end.
*
Don’t be misled by the slim appearance of this book, the writing is dense and you’ll need to focus to get into it. There’s so much happening, and there’s no info dumping, just seamless world building and subtly woven details and backstories that you’ll miss if you aren’t paying attention. For some, this might be a bit hard to follow in the beginning. I know a lot of readers will probably be swayed by this, but if you give it a chance, get into it, you’ll love it.
*
I loved Charlie’s character and her relationship with Vince. I loved the internal battle that Charlie was going through and the twist ending! I can’t wait to see what’s next.

What makes you feel safe when you go to sleep at night? Being able to check and see that your secrets are still hidden.
I wish I could say I was sorry, that I wanted to be honest the whole time, but I didn't. I never wanted to be honest. I just wanted what I told you to be the truth.
