A Certain Slant of Light, by Laura Whitcomb
*
Stunningly crafted! The Emily Dickinson vibes are strong here, and not just because of the similarly named poem, There’s a Certain Slant of Light. Laura Whitcomb wields this young adult story into a spooky romance with dark undertones. The story demonstrates how some feelings, like the uncertainty of death, love, and the need to be seen, are universal but can still be ambiguous.
*
The main character, Helen, has been unseen for 130 years, a ghost lingering between life and death. The only thing keeping her tethered to the real world is her host, someone who is always closely attached to literature. Haunting the life of a literature teacher, Helen suddenly feels human eyes on her, watching her, something that hasn't been possible for over 130 years. One second she’s reading a book over the teacher’s shoulder in his classroom and the next a student named James is watching her. This new connection to life quickly proves to be something Helen isn’t willing to give up. James, a fellow ghost, has found a way to roam among the living once again and they are determined to be together, even if that means taking over another body.
*
It sounds slightly morbid, like a ghost story better suited for Halloween with cheesy scare factors. Instead, Laura Whitcomb presents an elegantly written story of love, faith, forgiveness, and the walls we create for ourselves that shield us but can also stop us from living.
*
The characters are a mix and elegantly intertwined. From a young boy dealing with addiction, peer pressure, and judgment from the whole world, and a soldier, to a rigidly strict family centered around their religion, and a young mother, they all meld together as people do, in the most unexpected ways. Two people are forced to confront their pasts while others must come to terms with the present.
*
This passionate romance has everything from the supernatural, flashes of history, questioning faith, and all the drama that comes with young love.
*
Two spirits who have been wandering for years are hurtling towards each other, what will happen to those around them when they collide after all this time?
